This volume contains diary entries for the year 1874 in which Colesworthy wrote and entry for every day of the year. Some entries record only the weather. Other entries record Colesworthy's visitors and callers (including W.L. Garrison), deaths of friends and neighbors, and reports on Sunday church services. Colesworthy's wife, Mary Jane, dies in 1874, and he expresses his grief throughout many entries ("When I rise in morning how sadly I miss her; tears will start").
